About

My name is Ross Tikhov, and I am both a teacher and the founder of the Woodwinds Academy, based in Toronto, Canada. I’m a professional musician with over 14 years of performing experience. I hold a Master’s Degree in Music Performance from the Saint-Petersburg Conservatory and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of playing with top orchestras in Eastern Europe for 5 years, which allowed me to tour globally and perform in prestigious venues across Western Europe and China. Additionally, being part of professional woodwind quintets and ensembles for more than 8 years has not only broadened my repertoire from classical to contemporary music but has also honed my technical skills, deepened my musical interpretation, and fostered a nuanced understanding of ensemble dynamics. As of now, I’m the Principal Bassoonist at the Kindred Spirits Orchestra in Markham, Ontario.

This wealth of experience has shaped me into the professional musician I am today, providing me with a rich array of knowledge and skills to share with my students during lessons. This background lets me tailor my teaching to each student’s level and goals, ensuring they get the most personalized and effective learning experience possible.

Lessons

At Woodwinds Academy, I offer clarinet lessons, alto saxophone lessons, flute lessons, and bassoon lessons.

I have been teaching woodwind instruments to both children and adults for more than 7 years. Sharing the knowledge I’ve gained throughout my career and my passion for music with others is incredibly rewarding to me.

My lessons are always carefully thought out, planned, and tailored to meet each student’s individual needs and abilities. I aim to create a fun, flexible and inclusive learning environment where every student can learn at their own pace. In our lessons, we also practice ensemble playing, this help improving students’ musical skills and teamwork, so they can feel confident in any setting from school bands to professional ensembles.

In addition to the practical aspects of learning how to play an instrument, I also teach my students music theory. Music theory involves teaching how to read written music and how to understand time and rhythm in music. During lessons, I also emphasize breathing, articulation, sound quality, and comfortable finger and embouchure techniques. I teach students to work on music material creatively and accurately.
